The Lafourche Comet, October 10, 1935, page 5, col. 2 Mrs. Braud Passes Away The news of the death of Mrs. Henry J. Braud brought sadness to her many relatives and friends in Thibodaux, she dying, in New Orleans, Monday at 1:45 a.m., in her 69th year. The body lay in state at the McMahon Funeral Home until Tuesday morning when it was brought to St. Joseph's Catholic church in Thibodaux, where the deceased had worshiped for many years during her life and where the last sad rites were performed before the remains were consigned to a resting place in St. Joseph cemetery. The deceased, whose maiden name was Olivia Morvant, was a native of the First Ward of Lafourche parish, where she and her husband and children had lived for many years before coming to Thibodaux. But a few years ago Mr. Braud died and then Mrs. Braud and her children decided that there were better prospects in New Orleans, she living there until death claimed her. She was a kind, gentle lady, who was esteemed by both friends and acquaintances, her affection being greatly missed by the following named children: Mr. O. H. "Buck Braud, who resides in Thibodaux; Messrs Edward P., Lionel, James and Ory Braud: Mrs., Jules Clement, Mrs. R. A. Sturdivant, Mrs. Michael Kabel Jr., and Miss Lillian Braud, all of New Orleans. Falgout Funeral Homes, Inc., Raceland, La., in charge. ================================ RIVIERE, FERDINAND The Lafourche Comet, July 12, 1917, page 5, col. 2 Death of Fernand Riviere Relatives and friends in Thibodaux were shocked on Thursday of last week (5 Jul 1917) to learn of the death of Mr. Fernand Riviere, who expired at the Hotel Dieu, where he had gone in the morning for an operation, he having been sick for about two weeks previous. The deceased, whose age was 30 years, was the son of Mr. Edgar Riviere and Louise Hoffmann, former residents of Thibodaux. He served for several years as postmaster at Schriever. While there he married Miss Harriet Morvant, who, with three children (the eldest six years and the youngest 3 months) survive him. The deceased was a employee of the New Orleans Railway and Electric Light Co. and he was an estimable person. FURCY The Lafourche Comet, May 1, 1913 [Thursday], page 5, col. 2 Mrs. Furcy Guillot Mrs. Guillot departed this life last Friday night (25 Apr 1913), her end having been the result of a surgical operation that was performed last summer. At the time of her death she was residing on the Belle Grove plantation, in Terrebonne, where her husband is employed as plantation manager; but she was a native of Lafourche parish, having been born here 52 years ago. Consequently, her body was brought here last Saturday forenoon and laid to rest in St. Joseph Catholic cemetery. The deceased is survived by her son, Walter, and her daughter, Mrs. Gaston Aucoin. She leaves three brothers - Messrs Henry Braud, Wallace Braud and Chas. Braud -and seven sisters - Mrs. A. J. Fryou, Mrs. A. Bertherlotte, Mrs. Ulysse Morvant, Mrs.Edgar Hebert, Mrs. Percy Barelli, Mrs. A. J. Morvant and Mrs. Em. Keller. To all of these we extend our sincere sympathy. =========================== GUILLOT, FURCY The Lafourche Comet, July 17, 1930, page 4, col. 1 DEATH OF MR GUILLOT The daily papers brought the news Monday of the death of Mr. Furcy Guillot, he having passed away in New Orleans on Saturday, aged 71 years, his funeral being held Sunday. The deceased was a native of Lafourche parish, where, for many years, he was recognized as one of the best plantation managers in the partish, but with the decline of the sugar industry he decided to withdraw from it and pursue some other line. Thus a few years ago he went to New Orleans and opened a grocery, which he operated until his death. Mr. Guillot is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Gaston Aucoin, of New Orleans, a son, Mr. Walter Guillot, manager of the Uncle Sam plantation, of Convent, La., and a sister, who is Mrs. F. J. Guillot, of 610 Green Street, Thibodaux.

The deceased was formerly in the mercantile business at Lafourche Crossing, but of late years he had devoted his time to agricultural pursuits, wherein he was very successful. He was a widower, his wife having preceded him to the grave a long number of years ago. He had one daughter, who married a Mr. Felix Gaude, but she also passed into eternity some years ago. He is survived however, by his brother, Mr. F. J. Gaude, and several sisters. His remains were laid to rest Tuesday evening in St. Joseph Catholic cemetery. KEEFE, LAWRENCE The Lafourche Comet, Thursday, March 11, 1937, page 5, col. 3 Mr. Keefe Died Last Saturday Mr. Lawrence Keefe, who, three weeks ago, was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage, which is more or less fatal, died last Saturday at 10:10 p.m. at St. Joseph Hospital, in Thibodaux, where he had been receiving the best of attention. His age was 59 years. The funeral, an imposing ceremony, in St. Joseph's Catholic church, was held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Many friends gathered within the church to offer their prayers in behalf of the departed soul. Mr. Keefe was a native of Thibodaux, his whole life has been spent here, he being one the children of the late Lawrence Keefe, who established and for many years successfully conducted the Thibodaux Foundry, the deceased's mother being Annie Bracken Keefe. He attended different schools and acquired a good education, but we have no knowledge that he ever adopted any special vocation. However, some years ago, when his father was largely identified with the ownership in the Abby and Highland Planting Co., the deceased served in the office on Abby plantation, as the representative of his father's interest in that organization. But with the decline of the sugar industry - from 1913 to 1924 - the planting company went out of existence and then the deceased gave his attention to a machine supply store that he and his surviving brother conducted here, this business being carried on more as a means of keeping busy rather than as a medium of profit, hence the business was discontinued a year or so ago to rent the store place to the Delmel gas -supplying company, the deceased then becoming a gentleman of leisure and remained such until he became fatally ill. Though the deceased was pleasant and obliging with those with whom he was thrown in contact, he nevertheless was of a retiring disposition and therefore he did not take an active part in public matters. To cherish his memory he leaves one sister, Miss Mamie Keefe and one brother, Mr. James Keefe, he also leaving one nephew, Mr. Robt. H. Ketteringham, Jr. of New Orleans, and two nieces, Mrs. Arthur Danos and Mrs. Louis Dedek, both residents of Thibodaux. Mrs. R. H. Her death, which occurred at the age of 47 years, was caused by a stroke of paralysis. After services on Saturday, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, the body was taken to New Orleans for burial. The deceased was a sister of Mr. McNaughton, who was formerly a bookkeeper for the John T. Moore Planting Co., and for a long number of years she resided with the John T. Moore family. FRANCIS MCCULLA, one of the oldest citizens of this town, one who resided here during the rugged pioneer days, has departed for "that bourne whence none returns". Endowed with a vigorous constitution, such as the Irish usually enjoy, Mrs. McCulla had gone through many sieges of sickness and misfortune, but she always emerged with physical and mental buoyancy and this is was that she weathered adversity and tribulation until she had reached the ripe age of four score years and five. The deceased was a native of Ireland, but in her teens she came to America and nearly all the remainder of her life was pent in Lafourche parish, where she centered her affections and solicitude upon her beloved husband and four sons. She was strictly a home-body, but always ready or willing to assist a neighbor or friend. She was sincere in her profession of friendship, but in a minute she would flare up and resent any encroachment upon her rights. She was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and though her mental faculties and physical strength had become impaired during the last few years, she nevertheless sought always to perform her religious duties. Followed by a large concourse of warm friends and acquaintances her remains were escorted last Friday evening to St. Joseph Church and, after the last sad rites were performed, the body was placed within the elegant family vault to await the time when there shall be reunion in the realms above. ================================= MCCULLA, JOHN F The Lafourche Comet, [Thursday] February 9, 1939 page 5, col. 2 JOHN F. MCCULLA Died Last Sunday Death last Sunday at 1:45 p.m., claimed the life of John F. McCulla, an aged citizen of Thibodaux, who was, we believe, a native of this community, where he grew from childhood to life's end in a quiet and unassuming manner, he being strictly a home body, never being seen upon the streets unless business demanded that he should go forth. In his younger years, between 40 and 50 years ago, he was a cooper, working in the cooper shop that his father had in the front part of the property that is now the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Toups. He followed that calling for a number of years until the demand for sugar barrels and molasses hogsheads was supplied with machine made barrels, sugar still later, being put in sacks. After ceasing the cooperage work he occupied his time in giving attention to properties that he had in this town until he finally became ill, and passed from earthly activity, at the age of 76 years. He resided at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Toups. His funeral - leaving the Landry funeral home in Thibodaux was held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic church, where a solemn requiem mass was celebrated for the repose of the soul of the deceased. The church was full of relatives, friends and acquaintances of the McCulla family. The mass was read by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. A. R. Ravoire, while the deacon was the Rev. F. S. Lamendola, the subdeacon being the Rev. John J. Adams, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. A. M. Barbier being the in the sanctuary was evidence of his esteem for the deceased and the bereaved family. Several member of the clergy accompanied the remains from the home to the church and from the church to the cemetery, the pallbearers being Messers. L. K. Toups, M. Toups, Thomas McCulla, Donald McCulla, Edward McCulla Jr. and Harry McCulla. The sacred music during the church ceremony was rendered by Miss Clothilde Chol at the organ, the fine $8,000.00 organ that Mrs. L. K. Toups, last year, donated to St. Joseph's church, while the choir joined in the hymns. Besides Mrs. Toups, the deceased is survived by three brothers, whose Names are Joseph W., James A. and Edward F. McCulla. ====================================== MCCULLA, MRS. The Lafourche Comet, [Thursday] October 31, 1940, page 5, col. 2 Death of Mrs. McCulla Early Monday Morning The citizens of Thibodaux were shocked upon arising last Monday to learn that Mrs. Joseph McCulla had died at 12:25 a.m. at her home on Jackson Ave., in Thibodaux, her age being 70 years. About five weeks ago the deceased had been critically ill with a serious attack of pneumonia, but she rallied so well that she was able to be up and about, she even being able to walk around her yard, but in reality she had not fully regained her health, for she sustained a relapse, which brought on a paralytic stroke that soon ended he life. The body was transferred Monday from the family home to the Landry funeral home, on Canal Ave., where mourners gathered throughout the day Monday and Monday night to offer up prayers for the deceased, the funeral cortege leaving at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning for St. Joseph's Catholic church, where a requiem mass was celebrated for the repose of the departed soul, the officers of the mass being the Rt. Rev. Msgr. A. M. Barbier, celebrant: the Rev. F. S. Lamendola, deacon, and the Rev. Romeo Lapierre, sub-deacon. Then the body was conveyed to St. Joseph cemetery where it was laid away for eternal rest. The deceased was a daughter of the late Lange Reviere, who, for half a century, was a Thibodaux business man, who owned the building now known as the Block furniture store, Mrs. McCulla having been born, we have always understood, in the upper portion of that building, where the deceased grew from childhood to a young lady with a practical education acquired at Mount Carmel, she also being a fine pianist, which made her a charming member of Thibodaux society. She finally married, she and her husband seemingly living happily until cruel death finally tore them apart, leaving the husband to weep over the sad separation. Two children are also left, but their homes have been away from Thibodaux for a number of years, one being Mrs. Edward Oubre, of Port Arthur, Texas, while the son Mr. I. J. McCulla, a former Louisiana school teacher, now resides at Welsh, La. To the bereaved father and children we extend heartfelt sympathy. ================================ MCCULLA, WILLIAM C. McCulla family in Thibodaux leaned with sorrow of the death of William C. McCulla, a member of that family passing away last Saturday at 9 o;clock p.m., he having reached the age of 76 years and 7 months. The funeral took place Monday forenoon at St. Joseph's Catholic Church the body of the deceased being accompanied by Rev. James Rodrigue from the Landry's funeral hone to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where a solemn requiem mass was offered in behalf of the deceased, the celebrant of the mass being the Rt. Rev. Msgr. A. F. Ravoire, while the deacon was the Rev. James Rodrigue, with the Rev. Emile Fossier as the sub-deacon, there being a number of friends of the McCulla family in church to attend the ceremony and pray for the repose of the departed citizen, who had reached the age of 76 years. The funeral cortege was accompanied from the church to St. Joseph cemetery by the Rev. James Rodrigue who offered the last prayers at the grave. Thus ended the life of a man who had very little contact with the local public, he being from childhood a retiring sort of person. The Comet editor knew the deceased when he was a young boy, of possibly six years of age, it so happening that we lived, for a few months in a house adjoining the home of the deceased, so he and the Comet editor were chums while neighbors and that brought us in close contact, but our parents, who had not long been residents of Thibodaux, decided to buy a property down St. Charles street, not far from what is now the Stark ball park, but in those days it was the Chivers family home property. After moving to the St. Charles property we had little contact with the deceased, but we remained good friends for the balance of his life, which he spent practically in retirement,or altogether at his home, 422 East First street, in Thibodaux. The deceased had three brothers - John, Frank and Thomas, but two of them preceded him to the grave, he thus leaving but one brother, Mr. Thomas McCulla, to lament the end of the deceased's life. The deceased, whose age was 48 years, had worked for a half dozen years as a bartender in "Rene's Bar", where he had some in contact with many citizens, whose friendship he had gained and who were deeply saddened by his death. No. 196 U. C. V. turned out at his funeral which took place here yesterday
on the arrival of the train from New Orleans.
